I went out for my usual daily walk right before sunset this evening.  It was getting late and instead of going on my usual 3.5 mile walk, I opted to take a quick 2 mile walk around my subdivision so that I’d make it home before dark.

As the cool evening breeze whispered gently across my back, I looked up at the darkening sky and wondered if I’d make it home before the coyotes emerged from their hiding places to take over the wild desert night.

I picked up my pace, carefully skipping over the cracks in the sidewalk pretending to play the familiar childhood game “Step on a Crack, Break Your Mama’s Back.”  I was good at that…skipping over the cracks.

I looked up ahead of me and noticed the sky seemed to be getting darker by the second.  I walked faster now…fearing the sun would betray my wishes and take its final bow behind the western mountains before I could make it back home safely.

I rounded the corner…and as I did, I looked up expecting to see more gray billowy clouds covering the sky.

Instead, I saw the most stunning, ethereal display of imaginative colors and joy and quiet hope etched across the sky, that I had ever seen.  It was as if angels had taken handfuls of colorful ribbons and wispily twirled them as God Himself breathed fresh wind into the graceful coils - creating a pink and orange and purple and blue and grey whirlwind of wonder.

It was in that very moment that I realized I didn’t have to rush…that I had time…that the sun was still alive and well and present to dazzle its light on my path until my journey was over.

This is what many of our lives look like.  We are sure that these are our last moments and that we must hurry up and live, not realizing that the living happens on our journey to wherever it is in life we are traveling to. That the sun may appear to be nowhere in sight, but if we would simply look up and notice…there is a guiding force lighting our path.

We don’t have to rush.  We don’t have to hurry to arrive where we thought we should be.  There is enough time.  There is enough grace.  Enough space.  Enough love.  Enough beauty along the way that we can intentionally enjoy every single moment of our journeys without fear of the sun going down on them…on us.

You will get where you’re going.  And when you get there, you will have just enough light to guide you to your open door.

You think the day is dying on your dreams?  It’s not.

You think the sun has already hidden itself behind the western mountain that is your life, never to return again?  Not so, my friend.

There’s still time..and the Creator’s timing is perfect.  It always is.  And it always has been.

Keep going.  Keep chasing your dreams.  Keep walking in faith…until you arrive at the door of your destiny.

I got home just as dusk descended upon the earth.

I made it to my destination.

And so will you, my friend.

So will you.
